In our walk as children of God, we have to see the Bible as the authentic word of God. More importantly, we should pay a lot of attention to the words of Jesus Christ. The Bible, in John 1:1, calls Him “The Word”. If “The Word” says anything, we should pay particular attention. Jesus is the Word personified. He said of Himself in John 6:63, “the words that I speak to you are Spirit & Life”. Peter also said of Jesus “it is you that has the word of life” (John 6:68), no one has ever been spoken of as such!
On the foregoing statements, we lay a foundation for this month’s series, “THE ANIMATED LIFE”. In this series, we shall look at the things Jesus said about the Spirit-filled life and look at His life and examples. Thus, we start with “THE LIFE OF JESUS”.
The conception of Jesus was made possible by the Holy Spirit. Mary, a virgin conceived without a man. Amazing! John, the forunner of Jesus, was filled with the Holy Spirit from the womb (Luke 1:15). Elizabeth, John’s mom, was filled with the Holy Spirit. Remember the story in Luke 1:41? John’s father, Zachariah, was equally filled with the Holy Spirit. Jesus was dedicated to God by Simeon who was equally filled with the Holy Spirit (Luke 2:25-27). John announced Jesus for the first time as ” The One” who will baptise with the Holy Spirit (Luke 3:16). At His baptism at the River Jordan, Jesus was filled with the Holy Spirit (Lk 3:21-22). Jesus was led to the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. Even in temptation, He was filled with the Spirit (Luke 4:1).
Jesus’ first recorded action at the temple was His reading from the Book of Isa. 61:1-3, testifying that, “…the Spirit of the Lord is upon me” (Luke 4:18-19). John 3:34 (MSG) says of Jesus “for this one sent by God, speaks God’s word for God’s Spirit is upon Him without measure or limit”.
Let’s further consider Jesus’ teaching on “the HOLY SPIRIT” who He calls the Promise of the Father (Luke 24:49). Luke 11:13 says: “the Heavenly Father will give the Holy Spirit to as many who ask”. Luke 12:12 also says, “the Holy Spirit will teach us what to say at the very hour – spot on”. In John 16:5-7, Jesus said “it is to our advantage that He leaves… for without that, THE HELPER will not come”.
Being filled with the Holy Spirit is not a one-off experience, it is a continuous experience. Jesus said “remain in Jerusalem until you are filled with the Holy Spirit (Luke 24:49)”. Have you experienced this in-filling?
In Acts 2:4, the disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost. The result was seen in Acts 3 at the gate called ‘Beautiful’, when a crippled man was healed by Peter & John. Peter was again filled with the Holy Spirit. The result was seen in Act 4:13.
Paul, one of the greatest apostles, was also filled with the Holy Spirit (Acts 9:17, 13:9).
Being filled with the Holy Spirit is non-negotiable for a believer. Are you a believer? You can experience the help of the Spirit when you have Jesus in your life.
