The Relationship Quotient Of An Entrepreneur

Remi is the boss. With his vision, he started his company and hired the right people or so he thought. Within a year, his company was already noted for its innovativeness and originality. He was seen as persistent and passionate towards achieving his goals and company objectives.

However, in the last year, he has had a very high staff turnover. As is the practice of the organization, they conduct exit interviews for each employee leaving and one of the questions they ask is their reason for leaving.

The answer has always been the same – the hostile environment – what did that even mean? His managers were respectful; they shared the same vision as he and worked twice as hard. They held management meetings and even included the junior staff so that they could get a feel of what was happening in the company.

He knows that as the company expanded, he may not be getting the real info he needed so he made out time once in a while to go through the different units to ask questions. So why would anyone describe the environment as hostile? He got his answer the day he went through the camera feeds and saw himself yelling at employees for the smallest infractions. He saw how one of his managers left his presence with red-rimmed eyes.

Leadership is not easy and one of its hardest parts is maintaining relationships between you – the leader, the subordinates and their superiors; managing relationships between the company and the suppliers and other stakeholders. You may have the vision, the finance, the drive but without the right relationships, the company may not get to where it is supposed to be.

No matter how skilful or visionary you are, your relationship skills will be your biggest test ever. The saying, “Nobody cares how much you know until they know how much you care” will always be one of the true tests of relationships. Someone also said leaders have to be Real, Relatable and Relational. Jesus said, “Do to others what you want them to do to you.”
