Family Genetics And Survival

Genetics, as we all know, is the study of genes in living things (Gen. 1:11,12,21,24-25). Genes are very strong features & traits we inherit from our parents, e.g. colour of eyes, skin colour, hair, & height.

Some traits are obvious in our outward physical appearance (known as the phynotype), while others are not but are innate & internal. These traits are borne out of our genes.

Genes are made from molecules called DNA (Deoxyribonucleic Acid). DNA is a simple unit of information in a particular order called genetic code, it is copied & inherited across generations of family lineage. The information in the genetic code contains the instructions for the constitution & operation of an organism.

Both parents donate equal copies of genes to their offspring (1 Corinthian 15:38-39). Physical traits, e.g. beauty, height, colour, are superficial & do not have capacity to influence our destiny in life but, inner traits of character, attitude, intellect, etc. are deep & with strong capacity to influence destinies.

Humans are helpless about natural physical traits, what you have is what you got at birth, but we can exercise our inner traits. Our traits also come from interaction between our genes & the environment we grow up in, peer, family, social pressures & influences. Parents consciously & unconsciously transfer ideologies that are not genetic but have strong capacity to shape the future of their children & influence the children’s relationships & marriages for good or otherwise.

Many marriages die before they have opportunity to exist due to ideologies inherited from parents that are not genetic. It is possible to have genetic mutations, i.e. random changes in genes capable of producing new traits. This happens with new counsel. Genetic mutations can improve or worsen the odds in real life and in relationships (Matthew 13:24-30). The production of new traits as a result of mutation is known as evolution. In other words, your relationship can evolve (1 Samuel 25:2-3).

Also, as humans, we have the capacity to evolve genetically under the theory of natural selection. The theory of natural selection operates to preserve the favorable variation & reject the injurious ones in all living things. The purpose of the theory is to further propagate & assert ourselves as humans, only the best is put forward & likely to survive. The theory believes that only a few individuals can survive, even in business, relationship & marriage.

As Christians, we believe that we are all unique & so are our relationships & marriages. Our tendency to follow the pattern of our parents’ marriage may increase our chances of failure in our own marriages.

Only those who exploit & fit into the ‘conditions of life’ will survive in marriage. We need to make individual conscious effort & change happen. When the ‘conditions of life’ change, natural selection is favored by giving chance to those who have shown a higher degree of adaptation.

You have the responsibility to exercise the power of your inner strength to shape the future of your relationship.
