If ever there was a time to be the salt of the earth, it’s now. As you can see the whole world’s going bad like two-week-old Egusi soup you haven’t warmed in three days. And it is left to those of us with the fire burning in our bones to make a difference. It’s time to stop thinking of yourself as being a victim of the times. You are not a victim, you are a hero. And, Avengers! It’s time to Assemble!
Cyrus vs David
There’s a reason why the book of Psalms is infinitely more popular than the book of Isaiah. Psalms say things like “10,000 will fall at my right hand, and 5,000 at my left, but it will not come near me.” That’s the kind of thing we like to hear, that we will be safe while people are perishing all around us. But Isaiah forces you to fend for those perishing people, with passages like Isaiah 45, where Cyrus is charged to subdue the nations before him, and save the people from death and destruction. We want protection without responsibility, but Christianity has never been a self-centred faith.
I know what you’re thinking – “Me that I need saving, you’re telling me to save people, medd oo”. You’re forgetting that you’re not the one doing the saving. Like Hulk bursting out of Bruce Banner, there’s Someone powerful inside you, waiting to be unleashed. And that is the Holy Spirit. Unlike the former, the power you have isn’t the fictitious work of Stan Lee. It’s the work of a very real and powerful God, who’s been right where you’re standing today. Afraid and alone, with troubles surrounding him like water around an island.
But the same way our Jesus didn’t drown in the devastation of the crucifixion, that’s the same way you must know who you are, know where you’re coming from, and the glory that lies in store for you. A believer looks at all things from the perspective of eternity, and in eternity, COVID-19 is already over. Just like the great rapper, KB said, “Life Ain’t Been The Same Since Death Died”. If death is dead, why should a virus trouble you?
You have friends, family, followers, people caught in the quicksand of this pandemic. Will you panic like them? No. Would you leave them to sink? No. What are you going to do? You’re going to uplift them with powerful words. You’re going to show them what overcoming looks like so that they can follow after you just as you follow after Christ. And when fear creeps in, which it definitely will, you will remind it that you have not been given a spirit of bondage again to fear, but of power, and love, and of a sound mind.
