You Are A Creative Genius

TEXT: Genesis 1:26-27 and 1 Corinthians 2:16

A creative genius is one who has the ability to see the future today. These brilliant people lead us on the path towards tomorrow, presenting ideas or theories that change the way we see the world. They hear things others don’t hear. Creative geniuses determine the way we all live our lives. They shift our lives in a meaningful way (See Matthew 4:19 and Romans 12:2).

Being a creative genius isn’t something unattainable. In the words of Buckminster Fuller, “…everyone is a genius, but the process of living degeniuses them”. We have not been called to conform to the world but to transform it. As in 1 Corinthians 2:16, we have the mind of Christ.

Some of the traits of a creative genius are:

  1. They know who they are and believe in themselves, e.g John the Baptist in John 1:23, Jesus in John 14:6; Joseph in Genesis 37:19, and David in 1 Samuel 17:28-30. If you don’t know who you are, you take on a new identity every time and anytime you see any successful person in order to have a sense of belonging.
  2. They are lifetime learners (Luke 2:46, 2 Timothy 4:13). Learning is living. When you stop learning, you become old; whether at the age of 80 or 20. Every creative genius is a student of life. Albert Einstein called himself a pupil who wanted to know the thoughts of God. Da Vinci said he learned everything from the school of nature. Thomas Edison said he studied the laws of life. He said: “I know this world is ruled by infinite intelligence”. When we learn well, we live well.
  3. Tenacity/Hardwork (see John 4:34 and Hebrews 11:6). We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence is then not an act but a habit. According to Aristotle, hard work is the one thing which guarantees creativity. Thomas Jefferson said “I am a great believer in luck and I find that the harder I work, the more I have of it”.

  4. Creative geniuses are imitators (Acts 4:13). A sage once said “copying is how we learn”. We need copying to build a foundation of knowledge and understanding. There is a thin line between replication and inspiration. All ideas have been said to be second-hand, consciously or unconsciously drawn from a million outside sources. Estimates state that over 300 Exabytes pieces of information exist in the world. That equates to 315 times the amount of grains of sand in the world!
  5. Creative geniuses are not afraid of mistakes or failures (please study James 1:2-8 later). Winston Churchill said, “Success is the ability to move from failure to failure without losing your enthusiasm”. Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon, said “I will be hated for not trying at all. Better to try and fail. I could live with that”. Failure is a vital component of innovation.
  6. Creative geniuses step boldly in the directions of their beliefs (Matthew 16:21-23). Creative geniuses act and take risks. Talk is cheap. Anyone can talk, only the courageous take repeated action. What’s that project that’s been hanging around in your head or that you have given up on because of slight challenges? Let the creative genius in you come alive!
